Budgam, Oct 05: Commuters from several areas of North Kashmir and Budgam district are facing hardships during evening hours due to frequent traffic congestion at Narbal crossing on the national highway, where no effective measures have been put in place to ease the jams.
Zahoor Ahmad, a resident of Baramulla district, said the Narbal crossing on the national highway has become a major bottleneck during evening hours, with commuters forced to spend a considerable amount of time stuck in traffic jams every day.
“Narbal crossing serves as a crucial junction for traffic movement between Kupwara, Baramulla, Budgam, and Srinagar districts. The heavy influx of vehicles on the national highway often leads some drivers to block lanes and create obstacles for others, disrupting the flow of traffic and causing frequent jams,” he said.
He said that during evening hours, no personnel are present to regulate traffic, which hampers the smooth movement of vehicles from all directions at the Narbal crossing.
Mashiq Ahmad Mir, a student from the Tangmarg area, said that many students frequently travel to colleges, universities, and other educational institutions.
However, due to severe traffic congestion during evening hours, they often reach home late after spending a significant amount of time stuck in jams at the Narbal crossing.
"The traffic department should deploy their personnel and ensure that traffic flow is not disrupted, especially during the evening hours," Mir said. The commuters said government should construct a flyover at Narbal crossing to alleviate traffic congestion.
However, an official from the Rural Traffic Department said the matter would be looked into, adding that the duty hours of traffic personnel stationed at the Narbal crossing would be extended to ensure smooth vehicular movement on the national highway during evening and night hours.
