Cold wave grips Kashmir, Gulmarg freezes at -5.5 °C

Srinagar, Dec 13: After three days of cloudy weather, a cold wave has returned to Kashmir with the night temperature settling below sub-zero.  The Meteorological Department has predicted more dip in temperatures in coming days.
 
Director MeT office Srinagar, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that weather will likely remain  dry till 21st December. He said the weather will be extremely cold during morning and evening hours in the coming days.
 
“Some areas of Kashmir, including Srinagar, will expect fog in coming days and would affect traffic movement during morning and late evening hours,” he said
 
Pertinently, the 40-day-long period of harsh winter called the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will begin on December 21 and will end on January 31.
 
On Sunday, Srinagar recorded 12.0 °C as the maximum and 2.2°C  as the minimum temperature.  Ski-resort of Gulmarg recorded 1.6°C maximum temperature and minus 5.5°C as the minimum temperature.
 
Health resort Pahalgam recorded 9.5 °C and a minimum of minus 3.0°C degrees. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 11.8 °C and minus 2.2° C as the minimum temperature.
 
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 12.9 °C, while minimum temperatures settled at minus 1.9°C
 
As per the traffic department advisory subject for Wednesday, LMVs Passengers shall be allowed from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing this traffic.
 
Similarly, on the Srinagar-Leh road, one-way traffic shall be allowed from Srinagar to Kargil. Security forces shall follow the same schedule. No vehicle shall be allowed before and after cut-off timings, it said.
 
On  the Mughal road that connects Kashmir Valley with Pir Panchal, vehicular movement shall be allowed from both sides viz from Shopian towards Poonch and vice versa.
