Srinagar, Dec 25: Christmas, the commemoration of Jesus Christ’s birth, was celebrated across Kashmir with religious enthusiasm on Monday as devotees across the valley gathered for special prayers, seeking peace and prosperity for the Union Territory and the world.
The Holy Family Catholic Church at Maulana Azad Road in Srinagar hosted the largest congregation, adorned with vibrant decorations, bunting, and balloons, creating a festive atmosphere. Hundreds of people from Christians community, including women and children, joined in celebrating the joyous occasion with prayers. Notably, tourists from various parts of the country also participated, offering prayers for peace in Kashmir alongside the local community.
Similar prayers were held at Saint Joseph’s Church and other places of worship in the city, as well as in the tourist haven of Gulmarg. The valley experienced a “white Christmas” this year, with snowfall preceding the celebrations, transforming Gulmarg into a picturesque winter wonderland.
Devotees emphasized their prayers for global peace, with a particular focus on Kashmir. A follower shared that a special prayer for Kashmir was offered on the eve of Christmas, underscoring the significance of promoting harmony in the troubled area.
Throughout the nation, Christmas was celebrated with fervour, including prayers, revelry, and midnight masses. Communities, irrespective of religion, exchanged greetings and gifts to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. A devotee highlighted the relevance of Jesus Christ’s teachings, emphasizing peace, compassion, and brotherhood in a world grappling with escalating hatred, intolerance, and violence.
To foster communal harmony, groups of people, comprising men, women, and children, joined their Christian brethren in various locations across the city. The exchange of sweets and the symbolic gesture of wearing Santa caps were observed as ways to strengthen the bonds between the communities.
Importantly, smaller Christmas functions were also celebrated in different parts of the Kashmir Valley, showcasing the widespread observance of this joyous occasion beyond the main festivities in Srinagar.
