Pulwama, Mar 15: The Jammu and Kashmir government has launched a ₹55.54 crore project to address soil erosion along the banks of the River Chenab, which has impacted several villages in recent years.
The Minister Incharge of the Jal Shakti Department shared this information in response to a query by MLA Akhnoor, Mohan Lal Bhagat, in the assembly. The minister stated that the erosion control project, covering 58 kilometres, is being funded under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
The ₹55.54 crore project will benefit multiple villages located on both the left and right banks of the river. Villages on the right bank include Gurgi Dhaki, Sangrampur, Maira, Chak Kirpal, Bissa Chak, Manda, Chanjwan, Dalpat, Sitriwala, Indri, Manchak, Gair Bakore, Gigrial, Dhanpur, Datyal, Pangali, Hamipur, and Sidder. On the left bank, the project will cover villages such as Kharoun, Garkhal, Kotli Fattu, Burj Channi, Pargwal, Sajjwal, Brahmana-De-Kothe, Gurha Manhasa, Gurjral, and Hamipur Kona.
For the financial year 2024-25, the government has allocated ₹31.44 crore for 19 erosion control works, which are either tendered, allotted, or under construction. Additionally, 17 more projects worth ₹24.10 crore are set to be launched in the coming year.
