Jammu, March 09: The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) has called for a Jammu bandh on Saturday alleging that the J&K government decided to impose property tax without taking the stakeholders into confidence.
While addressing a press conference here, President CCI Arun Gupta said, “The J&K government is least bothered about the sentiments of the general public. Even the stakeholders were not taken into confidence before taking the decision to impose the property tax.”
The CCI appealed to the people to support the Jammu bandh call “to give a strong message to the J&K government”. “The imposition of property tax is the domain of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and the elected government but the J&K government has superseded the powers of elected bodies and has not even taken the stakeholders in confidence before deciding to impose the property tax,” Gupta said.
“JMC Mayor had announced in the General House meeting of the Corporation that no property tax shall be levied in Jammu,” the CCI president said. “Where are those claims?”
The CCI has been under question as the people of Jammu had been asking us why we are silent over the property tax, Gupta said. “We have decided to be with the people and raise their genuine concerns,” he said and appealed to the people to make the bandh call successful.
