Poonch, May 5: At least three people were killed and two others remain missing after a car skidded off the Mughal Road and plunged into a deep nallah in Poonch district amid adverse weather conditions.
Officials said the accident took place late Monday night when heavy snowfall and poor visibility disrupted traffic along the mountainous route, leaving several vehicles stranded. While most commuters were evacuated, one vehicle went missing during the chaos.
Following alerts from family members, a search operation was launched by police in Surankote. The vehicle was located on Tuesday in a deep gorge near Chhattapani in the Poshana area.
A joint rescue operation involving police, the Army, SDRF and local volunteers was launched under challenging terrain and weather conditions. Three bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining occupants. Drone assistance was also used to locate and access the site.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Majeed and driver Shokat Hussain, both residents of Mangnar in Poonch, while the identity of the third victim is being ascertained.
Officials said the bodies were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Surankote for post-mortem before being handed over to the families.
Authorities said search operations are continuing to locate the missing persons and urged commuters to exercise caution while travelling on mountainous roads, particularly during inclement weather.
