Cancer screening & awareness prog launched in Kargil

Kargil, Sept 23:   Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today inaugurated a Cancer Screening and Awareness Programme organised by Al Reza Health Care and Research Foundation in collaboration with Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Kargil.

Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor underlined that cancer is one of the major global health challenges of our time and stressed the importance of prevention, awareness, and early detection to save lives.

He assured that early cancer screening programmes would be expanded across Ladakh and confirmed that the sanctioned MRI machine has reached Srinagar and will soon be installed at Kargil. He also promised due consideration for upgrading DHK into a 200-bedded hospital.

He congratulated Al Reza Health Care and Research Foundation for its noble initiative and commended its dedicated service to the underprivileged sections of society since 2017.

The programme began with a two-minute silence in memory of the late Dr. Stanzin, former Medical Superintendent of DHK, honoring his contributions to healthcare in the district.

Delivering a lecture on cancer prevention, Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh from Yatharth Hospital stressed the importance of early detection and training local health workers to use portable diagnostic tools to extend life-saving services to remote areas.

Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Administrative Secretary Health Ladakh, spoke of his early medical service in the region and underlined the responsibility of doctors in saving lives. He acknowledged challenges faced by DHK, including winter heating and shortage of equipment, but assured that 125 vacant posts will be filled and that portable mammography machines would be introduced for grassroots screening. He also highlighted the impact of Ayushman Bharat – PMJAY, describing it as a global model in health security.

MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan expressed gratitude to the LG and praised Yatharth Hospital for extending cancer care to Kargil. He commended JUIAK Ladakh for its work in healthcare, education, communal harmony, and environmental protection. He strongly advocated for the posting of cardio and neuro surgeons at DHK, refresher training for medical staff, and the establishment of a Mini AIIMS in Ladakh. He also welcomed the sanction of an MRI machine for Kargil and urged the upgradation of the AMT School into a Nursing College.

CEC LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, submitted a memorandum to the LG seeking the upgradation of DHK from a 100- to a 200-bedded hospital, creation of a corpus health fund for poor patients, and incentives for religious scholars engaged in social service.

Dr. Mohd Abass, President of Al Reza Health Care & Research Foundation, said the organization was founded to bring quality healthcare to underserved areas of Ladakh. “Our vision is not only to treat patients but also to build awareness, strengthen preventive healthcare, and ensure that no family suffers due to lack of medical support. This Satellite Cancer Clinic is a step towards that dream,” he said.
