Srinagar, June 04: The 3rd edition of the Open Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB) Cycling championship was held at SyedabadOmpora, Budgam, where around 90 cyclists participated.
In the senior category, Parvaiz Hussain secured the first position, while Waheed Ahmed and Jehangir Ahanger secured the second and third positions, respectively.
In the youth boys category, Ikhlak Hussain of Khelo India cycling centre Budgam finished first, followed by Tajamul Rashid, Imdad Ali from the same centre who secured second and third positions, respectively.
In the sub-junior boys category, Azan Ali of Khelo India cycling centre Budgam, Arsalan of khelo India cycling centre Budgam, and Mansoor Majeed secured the first, second, and third positions, respectively.
In the kids’ category, Aleena Tahir of RP school HMT, Mohammad Mekail of Selvitor International School Shadipora and Mohmad Zaidan of Doon International School secured the first, second, and third positions, respectively.
The Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gull presided over the function as the chief guest on the closing ceremony, she alongwith Mohammad Akbar Khan, Member Sports Council, distributed the prizes among the winners.
Speaking on the occasion, Nuzhat Gull highlighted the importance of cycling and participation in games and sports among the youth, assuring the cyclists that the Sports Council would take every possible step to build modern cycling tracks and walkways in all the districts of J&K.
Nuzhat Gull applauded the role of cyclist Mohammad Akbar Khan playing an important role in inspiring and creating a favourable atmosphere for this sport in the district.
In another sports event, the fifth edition of the Vermul cup cricket match was held at Jhelum Stadium Janbazpora Baramulla. The match was played between Shining Star Khanpora Baramulla and Blue Star jetty Baramulla, and the latter won the match by 6 wickets.
Meanwhile, the four junior trainees of Rugby Khelo India Centre Bandipora who participated in the state championship 2023 held in Srinagar have been selected for the 8th National Championship to be held at Pune, Maharashtra, along with two senior players who have also been selected for the National games.
The trials for selection to the U-16 National team for SAFF games were conducted successfully with the collaboration of J&K Sports Council and AIFF. The event saw the participation by footballers from across the J&K. The event aimed to select the best talent who will later represent their respective zones in the national trials.
“It is a great opportunity for the footballers to showcase their skills and make a mark on the national level”, said Ahmad Ishfaq former international footballer and Pro Licence coach.
