Ganderbal, Feb 20: In a major move to address sanitation concerns, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has launched a major drive to clear clogged drains in the Gagangir area of Gund, located in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The drains, heavily obstructed by accumulated polythene and other waste, had been causing foul smell and raising significant hygiene issues for local residents. The BRO, which is responsible for maintaining the strategic Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road, deployed its workforce to clean the drainage system.
“The initiative aims to restore proper drainage functionality and improve the overall cleanliness of the area,” a BRO official said. He urged locals not to throw garbage into the drains.
Local residents have expressed their appreciation for the BRO’s efforts but have also urged the agency to construct concrete drains in the region. They said that such infrastructure would prevent future blockages caused by garbage accumulation and ensure long-term solutions to the recurring problem.
This development follows a recent report by Rising Kashmir published last month, which highlighted the poor condition of the drains in Gagangir-Gund. The report brought widespread attention to the issue, prompting the BRO to take swift action. As the BRO continues its efforts, locals remain hopeful for sustainable solutions to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the area.
