Pulwama, Nov 27: Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, the Legislative Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and MLA from Pulwama, claimed on Wednesday that the breach of privilege notice issued to him by the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker is an attempt to suppress the voices of opposition MLAs.
Parra, a first-time legislator, received the notice following a speech he delivered earlier this month. He is accused of breach of privilege by National Conference MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan Gurezi. The Assembly has given Parra seven days to respond to the notice.
Speaking to reporters in Pulwama on Wednesday evening, Parra confirmed that he had received the breach of privilege notice issued by the Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He said the opposition is elected to represent the aspirations and sentiments of the people in the Assembly.
“We are here to raise people’s concerns and aspirations in the Assembly,” the MLA Pulwama said, adding that they had done nothing wrong. “We spoke about Article 370, and the Speaker claims he didn’t hear anything. We submitted a resolution and an amendment, but the documents mysteriously vanished from the Assembly.”
Waheed further claimed that some opposition MLAs are trying to reflect the voice of the people in the Assembly, but are being intimidated with breach of privilege notices.
“They want to suppress our voices, but we will not be intimidated. We will respond to the notice,” Parra asserted. He added that the notice had been served in response to opposition to remarks made by a legislator in the Assembly about the late PDP patron and former Chief Minister of J&K, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and the banned organisation Jamaat-e-Islami.
