Ganderbal, Mar 22: Boat operators, known as Shikara Wallas, plying the serene waters of Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, are urging authorities to provide timber for boat repairs and construction. The demand stems from concerns over tourist safety and the need to bolster local livelihoods. Despite repeated appeals to the government, their requests remain unmet, risking the loss of their sole source of income.
Abdul Qayoom Dar, a seasoned boatman, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “We implored the government to provide us with timber for boat repairs, as our livelihoods hang in the balance. Without this support, we risk losing our only source of income.” With approximately 80 shikaras in operation, each requiring maintenance, the need for timber is critical.
Expressing optimism about the potential for tourism, another boatman emphasized the importance of expanding the fleet to attract more young individuals to the profession. However, this vision hinges on securing the necessary resources for boat upkeep.
Local resident Parvez Ahmad echoed the boatmen’s plea, urging swift government action. “The government must act swiftly to provide the necessary resources for boat repairs and construction,” he emphasized, underlining the longstanding nature of the issue.
