Baramulla, June 08: Police on Thursday said they arrested a person from the Rafiabad area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district who was involved in blackmailing and extortion activities.
A police official said the action was taken after receiving a written complaint from a concerned citizen. “The complaint, lodged at Police Post Delina by an individual, detailed the distressing ordeal his daughter had endured at the hands of an unknown caller. The victim had been continuously blackmailed and threatened for an extended period, causing severe distress to the family,” he said.
Moreover, the unknown caller had coerced the girl into providing a significant sum of money, the official said, adding, “Eventually, the situation worsened to the point where the daughter confided in her father, prompting him to seek assistance from the police authorities.”
Responding promptly to the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections at Police Station Baramulla, and initiated a thorough investigation. The team, led by Rayees Ahmad, in charge of Police Post Delina, and under the supervision of Sajjad Bukhari-JKPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Hqrs Baramulla), exerted considerable efforts to apprehend the extortionist, he said, adding that the successful operation culminated in the arrest of a person, Owais Rashid Bhat, also known as Zaidaan and Sahabaa, from his residence in Chitloora, Rafiabad, Sopore.
