At least ten cattle were killed in a bear attack on intervening Friday and Saturday night in Babagail Limber of Boniyar in Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Reports reaching GNS said that black bear attacked a cow shed, belonging to two brothers Baya Kassana and Noora Kassana – sons of Mohammed Ali Kassana. A total of ten livestock animals which included, two cows, five goats and three sheep were killed in the attack.

A group of locals told GNS that it was not the first time that such an incident took place in the area. “There have been such incidents happening for last several years now, which have resulted in loss of at least forty livestock animals”, they said.

“We humbly urge Wildlife Warden and Deputy Commissioner Baramulla to look into the matter and to ensure that no such incident takes place in the area”, they said adding we also appeal to the authorities to compensate the individual having lost his source of income in the recent incident.

When contacted, a Wildlife Department official told GNS that they have received the report about the incident. “A team has been rushed to spot to assess the loss”, the official further said. (GNS)
