Baramulla, May 28: The residents of Kanispora in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have expressed resentment against the district administration and the Beacon department over the dilapidated drainage system in the area.
The residents claimed that the dysfunctional drainage network had resulted in constant waterlogging along the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway near Kanispora, subjecting the local population to significant hardships.
The locals told Rising Kashmir that the drainage system, extending from Kanispora to Kralhar along National Highway, is entirely nonfunctional and blocked, leading to the submergence of the locality during heavy rainfall.
They said despite their persistent efforts to seek a resolution to the drainage issue, the authorities are not paying any attention to their grievances.
In the past few days, the continuous rainfall has left the Kanispora National Highway inundated, rendering it impassable for the residents. They said the waterlogging has severely restricted the movement of people, preventing them from accessing the main road.
“The Beacon Department had previously constructed a drain connecting Kanispora to Kralhar. It has now become clogged, exacerbating the situation,” said Abdul Majeed Rather, a local.
The locals residing in Tawheed Colony, Kanispora, highlighted the manifold problems resulting from the drain’s blockage, saying they are unable to attend prayers while students face difficulties in reaching their tuition centers.
Faced with these challenges, the residents have appealed to the district administration and the Beacon department to promptly address the issue by reconstructing and restoring the choked drain.
