Ahead of the four-phase of voting scheduled on May 13, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today jointly attended a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj.

Akhilesh Yadav is contesting from the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency while Rahul Gandhi from Rae Bareli. The former Congress chief is also seeking election from Kerala’s Wayanad.

SP and Congress are allies in the opposition INDIA bloc formed to take on the BJP in the ongoing 2024 general elections.

Addressing the gathering, the Congress leader said, “…INDIA Alliance and Akhilesh Yadav are going to win here. I give it to you in writing, a storm of INDIA Alliance is coming to Uttar Pradesh. I give it to you in writing, BJP is going to face its biggest defeat in the country, here in Uttar Pradesh”.

“Uttar Pradesh paves the way for the country. Uttar Pradesh has made up its mind that a change has to set in here, that a change has to set in in India and that is why the decision has been made. The public has made up its mind,” he added.

He also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“In 10 years, Narendra Modi never mentioned the names of Adani and Ambani. He gave thousands of speeches in 10 years but he never took their names. When someone gets scared, he takes the names of people who, he thinks, can save them. So, Narendra Modi took the names of two of his friends – “Save me, INDIA alliance has cornered me, I am losing. Adani-Ambani, save me.” That is why Narendra Modi took their names. He even knows how Adani sends money in a tempo. Prime Minister has personal experience of the tempo. Now, BJP, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah will attempt to divert your attention,” the Congress leader said.

“For the next 10-15 days they will try to divert your attention…Don’t get distracted. There is just one issue in the General Elections in India, all issues arise out of it – the Constitution of India,” Rahul Gandhi added.

Aam Admi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh also attended the public meeting.

The Congress has not fielded any candidate from the constituency as per the seat-sharing agreement with Samajwadi Party. The Bahujan Samaj Party which is not in alliance with any other party has fielded Imran Bin Zafar from Kannauj.

In 2019 polls, the BJP emerged triumphant, securing 62 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while two seats were clinched by its ally Apna Dal (S). Mayawati’s BSP managed to secure 10 seats, while Akhilesh Yadav’s SP garnered five and the Congress Party secured only one seat. (ANI)
