Jammu, Feb 01: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson for Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Abhijeet Singh Jasrotia on Saturday criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for skipping the “Beating the Retreat” ceremony, saying his absence undermines the principles of democracy and the Constitution of India.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Jammu, Dr Jasrotia, accompanied by Dr Pardeep Mahotra and Dr Parneesh Mahajan, said this is the first time in Indian history that both the Chief Minister and his cabinet have deliberately missed the ceremony, which celebrates the values of Indian democracy. “As a Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has failed to honour the spirit of our Constitution and the 148 crore citizens of India,” he said.
“The CM must recognise that he holds his position due to the provisions of the Constitution and must not neglect a day dedicated to honouring it.” Dr Jasrotia said. He accused Abdullah and his cabinet of insulting the Constitution, its makers and the sacrifices of those who fought for India’s freedom.
The BJP spokesperson questioned CM’s commitment to democratic values, referring to a past incident involving another NC leader, Akbar Lone. He expressed concern that Abdullah might echo such sentiments. “Is Omar Abdullah part of a narrative that undermines India’s sovereignty?” he asked, alluding to the former CM’s political affiliations.
Dr Jasrotia criticised Abdullah for what he described as archaic political tactics. “He (Omar) continues to operate within a ‘Parivar-Tantra’, neglecting the democratic ideals that our nation stands for,” he said.
The BJP leader demanded accountability from the former Chief Minister regarding his absence from a significant national celebration.
Concluding his address, Dr Jasrotia slammed those in political circles who advocate for an alternative constitution and expressed his belief that such sentiments pose a threat to India’s constitutional integrity.
