Jalandhar, July 23: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), through its Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), organized a successful two-day training program for mentors of standards clubs and science teachers from Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. The event took place at The Maya Hotel, Jalandhar, on July 22-23, 2024, with over 110 participants.

In the inaugural session, Joint Director BIS-JKBO, Pankaj Atri, emphasized the program’s goal of educating participants on “Learning Science via Standards” (LSVS). He encouraged mentors and teachers to integrate LSVS into their curriculum to help students grasp scientific laws and principles in daily life.

Deputy Director BIS-JKBO, Hitesh Yadav, provided an overview of BIS’s activities, including standardization, certification schemes, testing, training, and standards promotion.
Key resource persons, Sanjiwan Singh Dadhwal, Rajeshwar Salaria, and Mrs. Monika Sharma, delivered lectures and presentations on topics such as the concept and methodology of LSVS, BIS activities, and the BIS website and e-BIS features. They discussed the importance of purchasing items with the ISI mark, distinguishing between genuine and fake ISI marks, and the hallmarking scheme for gold, including how to check the HUID number on gold ornaments. They also provided lesson plans on different products, demonstrating how teachers can use these plans in schools to enhance students’ understanding of LSVS.

On the second day, participants visited JBS Testing Solutions Laboratory in Jalandhar, where the Quality Manager demonstrated the testing processes for iron bars and paving blocks, providing practical insights into testing procedures.

Participants also presented group presentations on various subjects to illustrate the application of scientific laws in standards.

Standard Promotion Officer (SPO), Sh. Ashish Kumar Dwivedi, discussed the financial aspects of standards clubs and encouraged mentors to register on the BIS website for regular updates on their club activities. He stressed the importance of maintaining updated records of club members at the national level.

The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates by officials of BIS.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the program, recognizing its critical role in enhancing their understanding of standard structures and technical details.

”Learning Science via Standards” is an innovative initiative designed by BIS (The National Standards Body of India ) to help students learn science through practical applications. This initiative focuses on a series of lesson plans that connect scientific principles to everyday products, helping students appreciate the importance of quality and standards in their future endeavors.”
