Jalandhar, Mar 6: The Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) commemorated World Consumer Rights Day 2024 with a grand celebration featuring Manak Mahotsav and Manak Manthan on Grey Cast Iron as per IS 210:2009.
The event held in Jalandhar witnessed the participation of over 100 students, parents, mentors, and representatives from various BIS standard clubs, along with several NGOs working in the field of Consumer Protection. The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Tilak Raj, Director & Head (JKBO), BIS, who shed light on this year’s theme “Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence” and urged consumers to align with the latest developments and utilize BIS digital tools for quality verification.
Hitesh Yadav, Assistant Director, BIS JKBO, delivered a presentation on BIS initiatives for leveraging digital technologies to benefit consumers and highlighted the features of the BIS Care App. The event also included felicitations for NGOs and Standard Club students for their contributions to various BIS Standard Club activities. Students presented the Manak Geet and performed skits focusing on the importance of purchasing products with the right quality at the right price, especially at the grassroots level.
Later in the evening, a technical session on IS 210:2009 (Grey Cast Iron) was organized, attracting participation from over 90 industries from Jalandhar, Batala, and Gurdaspur. Tilak Raj emphasized the significance of Cast Iron for casting industries in his welcome address. Niraj Kumar Mishra, Assistant Director, BIS JKBO, delivered a detailed presentation on the technical requirements of IS 210:2009 and IS 1879:2010 (Malleable Pipe Fittings), emphasizing their importance from a consumer perspective.
Dr Raman Bedi, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jalandhar, highlighted the testing facilities available at the institute for industries and emphasized collaboration between industries and academia to ensure product quality.
A group of six students from NIT Jalandhar presented their study on current developments in Grey Cast Irons as per IS 210:2009. The participants applauded BIS for its initiative in celebrating World Consumer Rights Day 2024 and appreciated the insightful discussions during the Manak Manthan session.
