Srinagar, April 13: Birla Open Minds International School, Pampore Sunday hosted a cross-country run along the scenic Boulevard Road, from SKICC to Nishat, in Srinagar. The event, held to raise awareness about climate change, attracted a large number of students united in their commitment to environmental conservation.
A statement said that the event was flagged off by Inshah Bashir, currently captain of the J&K wheelchair basketball team, who has been a source of inspiration for overcoming adversity and promoting inclusivity. Bashir’s presence at the event highlighted the importance of community participation and inclusiveness in tackling global issues such as climate change.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which focuses on urgent actions to combat climate change and its impacts. The cross-country run served as both a fitness activity and an environmental campaign, underscoring the crucial role that collective action plays in preserving the planet for future generations. A.A. Mir, Chairman of BML Welfare Trust, highlighted the crucial role of tree plantation in the fight against climate change: “Planting trees is one of the most effective ways we can combat climate change. Each sapling we plant today is an investment in the future, helping to restore balance to our ecosystems. Our ‘Green Kashmir, Clean Kashmir’ campaign seeks to make tree plantation a part of our daily lives, ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.”
Through the initiative, the BML Welfare Trust encourages local communities to actively participate in planting trees, promoting the idea that environmental responsibility begins at the grassroots level.
The event also included educational components, where participants were encouraged to engage in discussions about sustainable living. Topics covered during the event included waste management, water conservation, and reducing plastic consumption. Students from Birla Open Minds International School led several awareness sessions, offering practical tips on how individuals can contribute to the fight against climate change. The day also featured a pledge-taking ceremony, where participants committed to adopting more sustainable practices in their daily lives. This included pledges to reduce plastic use, conserve water, and adopt eco-friendly transportation methods.
G.M. Lone, General Secretary of the BML Welfare Trust, spoke about the long-term vision behind the initiative, saying: “The natural beauty of Kashmir is unmatched, but it is increasingly under threat. Through initiatives like ‘Green Kashmir, Clean Kashmir,’ we aim to restore and protect the region’s environment by encouraging the community to take proactive steps. Planting trees, conserving resources, and reducing waste are essential practices for building a sustainable future.”
The event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote sustainability in the region. Birla Open Minds International School has long been committed to environmental education, ensuring that students not only learn about sustainability but also actively engage in it. The school’s ongoing efforts include incorporating environmental values into its curriculum and encouraging students to take leadership roles in community-driven initiatives. Dr Mehnaz Rehman, Principal of Birla Open Minds International School, emphasised the importance of education in nurturing future leaders committed to sustainable practices. She stated: “Today’s event serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in fighting climate change. As an educational institution, we not only impart knowledge but also instil values in our students that promote environmental responsibility. This run is a small but significant step towards creating a green and sustainable future.”
The BML Welfare Trust is committed to continuing its environmental outreach through tree planting drives, clean-up campaigns, and workshops on sustainability. The Trust plans to expand its activities and involve more community members in practical environmental actions. As the region faces increasing challenges due to climate change, the efforts of Birla Open Minds International School serve as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of community involvement in protecting the environment.
