Srinagar, Mar 03: The construction work of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel on National Highway-144A in Rajouri district began with its inaugural blast on Monday. The tunnel, spanning 1.1 km, is a crucial part of a 16.1 km-long project connecting Kalali in Rajouri district to Bhataduria in Poonch district, officials said. Once completed, the tunnel will serve as a vital alternate route for Army troop movement and civilian traffic, ensuring smoother connectivity through the rugged terrain between Rajouri and Poonch. The project is expected to reduce travel distance, enhance defence logistics, and boost regional development. Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer, Project Sampark said that BRO’s commitment to spearheading crucial road projects aimed at enhancing connectivity in remote areas and strengthening defence infrastructure in forward areas. The ongoing developments underscore the organisation’s dedication to national security and regional development, he said. PRO & Spokesperson Ministry of Defence, Jammu, Lt Col Suneel Bartwal told Rising Kashmir that this tunnel will serve as an alternate axis for the movement of Army troops and general public commuters in the challenging terrain from Rajouri to Poonch. “The inaugural blast was done by Brig Neeraj Madan, Chief Engineer, Project Sampark along with AM Prasad, Regional Officer, Jammu, MoRTH. The event was physically graced by various officials from the Civil Administration highlighting the collaborative effort between the BRO and the various departments of district administrations,” he said. Lt Col Suneel said that prior to the blast, a puja ceremony was conducted at the site of tunnel. This project is poised to enhance connectivity in the region by significantly reducing the length of the highway by 10.8 km, facilitating smoother and more efficient transportation between strategic locations. “The Bhimber Gali Tunnel is a continuation of Border Roads Organisation’s (BRO) relentless efforts to enhance regional infrastructure development. Building on the momentum of the Naushera Tunnel breakthrough (700 meters) on January 29, 2024, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) continues its rapid progress in enhancing infrastructure across the challenging terrain of the Rajouri and Poonch districts,” he said. Lt Col Suneel said that once completed Bhimber Gali Tunnel will not only facilitate civilian and military movement but also contribute significantly to economic growth and regional accessibility. “BRO remains steadfast in its mission to build and upgrade strategic road networks across challenging terrains, ensuring seamless connectivity for both defence and civilian purposes,” he added.
