JKPCC Kissan Congress seeks urgent intervention to address agrarian distress in UT
Srinagar, Apr 10: In a significant political outreach aimed at highlighting the concerns of the farming sector in Jammu and Kashmir, JKPCC Kissan Congress Chairman Bharat Priye on Friday called on senior Congress leader and permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee Digvijaya Singh during his visit to Kashmir.
During the interaction, Bharat Priye apprised Digvijaya Singh of the pressing issues confronting farmers across the Union Territory and urged him to raise these concerns at the highest levels within the party to secure national attention.
He highlighted a range of challenges affecting the agrarian sector, including declining farm incomes, inadequate Minimum Support Price coverage, rising input costs, erratic weather patterns and limited access to modern agricultural infrastructure. He also drew attention to the difficulties faced by orchardists and small-scale farmers, particularly in market access, transportation and post-harvest losses.
Bharat Priye stressed that farmers in the region face unique geographical and logistical constraints, requiring targeted policy interventions and sustained institutional support.
Seeking urgent redressal, he urged Digvijaya Singh to advocate comprehensive policy measures, including improved implementation of central schemes, expansion of crop insurance, financial assistance to distressed farmers and enhanced support for the horticulture sector, which remains central to the rural economy.
He also emphasised the need to engage youth in agriculture, noting that limited incentives and opportunities are pushing younger generations away from the sector.
Digvijaya Singh assured that the issues raised would be taken up within the party and at appropriate forums, stressing the need for inclusive and region-specific agricultural policies.
The meeting underscored the need for sustained focus on the agrarian sector in Jammu and Kashmir, which continues to face structural challenges despite its contribution to the local economy.
Bharat Priye reiterated that continued engagement with senior leadership is essential to bring the concerns of J&K farmers into the national discourse and secure meaningful solutions.
