Baramulla, Feb 18: Ten cattle were killed in a bear attack over the weekend in Boniyar, Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The black bear attacked a cow shed owned by brothers, Baya Kassana and Noora Kassana, resulting in the death of ten livestock, including two cows, five goats and three sheep.
The locals of Babagail Limber reported that such incidents have been occurring in the area for several years, leading to the loss of approximately dozens of livestock animals.
They have urged the Wildlife Warden and Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. They also appealed to the authorities to compensate the people who lost their source of income due to the recent attack.
The Wildlife Department responded to the incident and sent a team to assess the loss. A department official confirmed receiving the report about the attack.
Locals said the incident highlights the ongoing conflict between wildlife and humans in the area, with bears often wandering into villages and attacking livestock.
