Srinagar, July 13: The much-anticipated Batamaloo Souq Market and Craft Center, a prominent project under the Srinagar Smart City initiative, is on the verge of completion, officials announced on Thursday. The ambitious project, estimated to cost Rs 31.22 crore, aims to revitalize the local economy and provide a vibrant marketplace for residents and tourists alike.
According to Athar Amir Khan, CEO of the Srinagar Smart City project, the construction work is progressing swiftly, and the project is expected to be finished within the next few months. The Batamaloo Souq Market will transform into a picturesque pedestrian mall, boasting a spacious food square and ample parking facilities.
“The Batamaloo Souq Market and Craft Center is one of our most ambitious undertakings. We are just a few months away from completing this beautiful project, which will breathe new life into the area,” stated Khan. “The market will feature a wide range of retail facilities, offering handicrafts, dry fruits, spices, and other specialties from the Kashmir valley. Additionally, it will include a dedicated plaza for cultural activities, exhibitions, and an organized vending zone.”
The relocation of the bus terminal to Parimpora had a significant impact on the businesses in Batamaloo, leading to a decline in customer traffic. Shopkeeper Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat expressed his anticipation for the completion of the Batamaloo Souq Market, believing it will attract more people and boost local businesses.
“Our businesses have suffered since the bus terminal moved. Many shops had to relocate or shut down due to reduced footfall,” said Ahmad. “However, with the completion of this prestigious project, we hope to see an increase in shoppers and a revival of our businesses.”
The Batamaloo Souq Market and Craft Center is part of the comprehensive smart city project in Srinagar, which encompasses various initiatives aimed at modernizing the city’s infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The authorities overseeing the smart city project are committed to completing the majority of the ongoing projects in the near future.
With the completion of the Batamaloo Souq Market and Craft Center, the residents of Batamaloo can look forward to a vibrant marketplace that celebrates the region’s rich culture and heritage. It is expected to rejuvenate the local economy, attracting visitors and providing a platform for local artisans and businesses to thrive.
