Srinagar, Apr 27: The students at the Government Medical College Baramulla complain that the GMC lacks basic facilities, which is taking a “heavy toll” on their academics.
At the new GMC, the fourth batch of MBBS students has joined the college this year. However, they suffer due to the lack of many facilities.
The students told Rising Kashmir there is no audio-visual system in classrooms and many end up skipping their classes daily due to unavailability of mikes.
At the medical college, the authorities are yet to make its mess facility functional for the hostel due to which students face problems.
“We get the food outside the college premises and we take it to the hostel room which is inconvenient for students. Similarly, there is a shortage of drinking water,” the students said.
The students also demand beds and almirahs for hostel rooms, saying they have submitted an application in this regard but that nothing has been done till date.
Officials of the medical college also have complaints: “There is a lack of security measures despite the fact that four MMBS batches of the college remain in the hostel.” They also requested the administration to install CCTV cameras across the premises of the new medical college.
A college official said the hostels lack proper washrooms, thereby adding to the inconvenience of students.
Director (Coordination), New Medical Colleges, J&K, Dr Yashpal Sharma said he will look into all the issues. “This is a new medical college and it takes time. Every year, the new medical colleges get funds and new things are added,” he said.
Principal GMC Baramulla, Dr Rubi Reshi said Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation Limited (JKPCC) has not handed over many areas of the medical college and they have taken up all the issues with the concerned authorities.
“Mess would be functional very soon. We will resolve all the issues. We have washrooms there and we will make them functional,” she said. Regarding the lack of mikes in classrooms, the principal said, “Procurement has to go through proper formalities and it takes time.”
On college security, Dr Rubi said they are already working on it and have placed orders for 13 additional security people. “We have also constituted a team regarding the installment of CCTV cameras. One by one all the issues would be resolved,” she said.
