Handwara, Apr 09: The Bar Association Handwara, in collaboration with Government Medical College Handwara, organised a blood donation camp at the court complex on Thursday, drawing active participation from advocates, court staff, and members of the public.
The camp was inaugurated by Additional Sessions Judge Handwara, Mansoor Ahmad Lone, in the presence of the Medical Superintendent of GMC Handwara, senior advocates, and officials. The initiative aimed to support the functioning of the blood centre at GMC, which operates round the clock and depends on regular donations to meet patient needs.
Officials from GMC Handwara said the hospital requires a steady supply of blood due to high patient inflow, particularly from economically weaker sections of the district. They noted that many patients, especially pregnant women, suffer from anaemia and often require blood transfusions. “Most of the patients we receive are anaemic. We provide blood free of cost to those in need,” an official said.
They added that blood has a limited shelf life and must be used within a specific period, making regular donation drives essential to avoid shortages.
The camp was organised following a proposal by the Additional Sessions Judge, who encouraged holding the drive within the court premises. Responding to the call, members of the Bar Association, led by its president, extended full support and urged advocates to donate blood.
“Blood donation is a noble cause. A single unit can save a life,” members of the association said, adding that the legal fraternity has a responsibility to contribute to social welfare initiatives.
Advocates, court employees, and volunteers donated blood during the camp. Organisers described the response as encouraging and said it reflects growing awareness about voluntary blood donation.
The Bar Association Handwara said it will continue to organise such camps in the future to ensure a steady blood supply in hospitals. They also appealed to the public to come forward and donate blood regularly to support patients in need.
