Handwara, Aug 5: An aspiring doctor and another girl were killed and two others injured after their vehicle met with an accident in north Kashmir’s Handwara on Monday. The family was returning from a Bangus trip when the mishap occurred.
According to reports, the private vehicle (JK01AH-0143) they were travelling in met with an accident in the Reshwari area of Handwara in the Kupwara district. Immediately after the incident, a rescue operation was launched, and all injured persons were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
On-duty doctors then shifted them to GMC Handwara, where the aspiring doctor and the girl were declared dead on arrival. The other two injured individuals were subsequently moved to Srinagar for advanced treatment.
The deceased persons have been identified as Dr. Saba Shafi (26), daughter of Mohammad Shafi, and Aleeza (17), daughter of Zahoor Ahmad. The injured persons have been identified as Shabir Ahmad Mir and Noorian, all residents of Pampore. According to the family, Saba Shafi had recently returned from violence-hit Bangladesh.
A police officer confirmed the incident to Rising Kashmir and said they had registered a case under relevant sections of law and started an investigation, looking into all angles of the accident. Initially, it appears that the accident occurred because the driver lost control of the vehicle, he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Aijaz, Deputy Medical Superintendent at Associated Hospital GMC Handwara, said they received four persons, including two girls and two males. The girls were brought dead to the hospital, while the driver suffered critical head injuries, and the boy sustained minor fractures, he said.
The doctor said the injured duo had been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar for treatment, while the bodies of the girls had been handed over to their families after completing medical formalities and police proceedings.
