Srinagar, May 02: The Inter-college Badminton Rolling Trophy (2024) organised by Govt. College for Women, M.A Road, Srinagar concluded on Thursday with the host college clinching the coveted trophy.
Director Colleges, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Ashai was the Chief Guest while Dean Academic Affairs and Dean Humanities & Liberal Arts, Cluster University Srinagar Dr. Deeba Sarmad was the Guest of Honor at the valedictory function.
The tournament, organised by the college’s Physical Education Department from April 27 to May 2, brought together talented players from various colleges, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship on the court.
The final matches were played between Govt. College for Women, M. A. Road and Govt. College for Women, Nawakadal. In the doubles match, Eirtiqa Tariq and Faheema from GCW M.A. Road defeated Arooj and Basima from GCW Nawakadal to clinch the title. Earlier, in the first singles game, Faheem from GCW M.A. Road defeated Mansha Dar from GCW Nawakadal while in the second singles game, Arooj from GCW Nawakadal defeated Eirtiqa from GCW M.A Road
Speaking on the occasion, Director Colleges, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Ashai appreciated the efforts of the college in organizing various sports events.
“We have been witnessing rise in sedentary lifestyle problems even among students. By involving them in various physical activities, we can address the issue. Sports helps reduce stress and improve physical and mental health. Sports also help develop important social skills. It also helps students develop a competitive spirit and a sense of discipline which helps them in the long run,” said Prof. Ashai.
Earlier, welcoming the guests, Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Ruhi Jan Kanth said the college has been organizing various sports events quite regularly. “We have also been constantly upgrading the college’s sports infrastructure to provide best possible facilities for students,” she said.
Prof. Ruhi said the college has been collaborating with various associations to inculcate sports culture among the students especially the female players. “Many of our students have brought laurels by winning various inter-college tournaments and we continue to produce more and more talented sportspersons,” she added.
Pertinently, at the inaugural function held on April 27, Ms. Nuzhat Gul, Secretary, J&K, State Sports Council, was the Chief Guest. In her address, Ms. Nuzhat Gul highlighted the importance of sports in the holistic development of students. She also stressed on the need for inculcating the spirit of sportsmanship among the students.
