Srinagar, May 20: Police in Srinagar have arrested two auto-rickshaw drivers after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed them making obscene and insulting remarks targeting women, officials said .
According to police, Police Station Shaheed Gunj took suo moto cognizance of the incident soon after the video surfaced online and initiated an investigation into the matter.
The accused have been identified as:Adil Ahmad Shah, S/o Ghulam Nabi Shah, a resident of Draigam, Budgam, working as an auto driver.Mehraj Uddin Rafique, S/o Abdul Rashid, resident of Brain Nishat and presently residing in Natipora, also working as an auto driver.
Police said both individuals were taken into custody following identification during the preliminary investigation.
Authorities have also seized two e-rickshaws allegedly linked to the case, bearing registration numbers JK01 BA 0714 and JK01 BC 0277.An FIR, numbered 46/2026, has been registered at Police Station Shaheed Gunj under relevant legal provisions.
Meanwhile , further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances related to the incident.
In an official statement, police reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of women and warned that any act aimed at insulting or harassing women would invite strict legal action.
The incident has sparked public discussion on women’s safety in public spaces and the growing role of social media in bringing such incidents to the attention of law enforcement agencies.
Police have urged citizens to report cases of harassment promptly and cooperate with authorities in maintaining public safety and social accountability.
