Srinagar, Mar 11: With 1.7 million tulips ready to bloom, Asia’s largest tulip garden is gearing up to welcome visitors on March 19, revealed Sheikh Fayaz, Commissioner Secretary of Parks, Gardens, and Floriculture, on Monday.
In an interview with Rising Kashmir, Sheikh Fayaz disclosed that the department is finalising arrangements to ensure the timely opening of the garden. He assured that all preparations are in place, with tulip saplings currently being planted inside the garden premises.
Highlighting the import of tulip bulbs almost every year, Sheikh Fayaz revealed that this year’s garden will boast 1.7 million flowers. The Department of Floriculture has also introduced five new tulip varieties and expanded the garden’s area.
During a meeting at the Civil Secretariat, Commissioner Secretary Sheikh Fayaz Ahmad emphasised the department’s commitment to enhancing the allure of the Tulip Garden. He noted the addition of five new tulip varieties, bringing the total count to 73.
Travel agencies have expressed optimism about a surge in tourist footfall this year, citing the Tulip Garden as a major attraction for visitors from across the nation and the globe. They anticipate a boost to the Valley’s summer tourism season, courtesy of the early opening of the Tulip Garden in Srinagar. Additionally, the department plans to organize a tulip festival to promote Kashmir tourism.
Reflecting on the garden’s significance, Sheikh Fayaz remarked on its inclusion in the World Book of Records, a source of pride for the Floriculture department. He expressed confidence in surpassing last year’s tourist record, with preparations underway to accommodate the expected increase in visitors.
Sheikh Fayaz conducted a review of various civil works in the garden, including facelifts, toilet facilities, soakage pits, lighting systems, and illuminations. He directed officials to expedite the completion of pending tasks and urged the Director of Floriculture to personally oversee the execution of works to ensure timely completion.
In 2023, over 3 lakh tourists visited the Tulip Garden in Srinagar, and officials are hopeful of surpassing this record in the upcoming season.
