JAMMU, July 11: The Army on Tuesday claimed to have foiled a major infiltration bid in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district by killing one terrorist and injuring two others, who managed to escape across the Line of Control (LoC) under the cover of darkness and dense forests.
The Army also recovered weapons, ammunition and communication equipment from the slain terrorist after conducting a search operation in the area.
According to Defence PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, the Army detected a suspicious movement of a group of three terrorists from across the LoC towards the Indian side on Monday night.
“The alert troops challenged the infiltrators when they were about 300 meters inside the Indian territory and engaged them in a heavy gunfight. One terrorist was seen falling on the Indian side of the LoC, while two others, who were injured, took shelter in the jungle,” he said.
He said that the area of operation was a difficult terrain with thick vegetation and bad weather conditions. The terrorists also hid themselves in the heavily mined area.
“The additional troops cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation. In the process, they recovered the body of one terrorist along with an AK 47 rifle, three AK magazines with 175 rounds, one 9 mm pistol, two magazines with 15 rounds, four hand grenades, communication equipment and other items,” he said.
He said that during further search operations, blood trails and drag marks on the ground were observed leading towards the LoC.
“Possibly, the other injured terrorists managed to move back across the LoC taking advantage of the dense forest,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Army also held a security review meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and Intelligence Agencies, IB and CID at Rakhmuthi Akhnoor in Jammu on Tuesday.
The meeting discussed various measures to coordinate and synergize the efforts of the security forces and intelligence agencies to deal with the security situation in the hinterland as well as any flood threat.
