Srinagar, Mar 22: Amid rising stress and anxiety levels, more and more Kashmiris are turning to aquariums for peace and relaxation. Aquarium sales in Srinagar have seen a noticeable rise, with doctors endorsing their therapeutic benefits, particularly for those dealing with stress-related disorders like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
As per the health reports, Kashmir has one of the highest rates of PTSD globally, with nearly 45% of the population experiencing mental distress due to decades of conflict. Studies by the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) in Srinagar reveal that thousands suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD across the Valley, making alternative stress-management techniques crucial.
Nisar Ahmed, a shopkeeper at Hari Singh High Street—a popular hub for aquarium enthusiasts—shared that many customers have told him that watching fish swim helps them feel calmer. “Some come on their doctor’s advice, while others find it to be their personal escape from stress,” he said. “The prices vary from Rs 12,000 to Rs 1 lakh, depending on the size and type of fish.” Other aquarium owners in Srinagar also echoed these sentiments.
Rayees Ahmad, a university student, said his aquarium has brought him peace. “Watching the fish swim is hypnotic and helps me unwind after a long day,” he noted.
Saima Wani, a clinical psychologist at an NGO in Srinagar, told Rising Kashmir that she regularly advises her patients with mental stress to consider getting aquariums. “Aquariums have transformed many lives here, helping those with anxiety and depression to recover from shock and fear,” she said.
Bilal Hussain, another shopkeeper in Lal Chowk, shared his personal experience: “In the chaos of daily life, my aquarium is my personal therapy. It’s like bringing a slice of nature into my home.”
A psychiatrist at the Government Psychiatric Hospital Srinagar highlighted the benefits of aquariums for stress relief. “Watching fish swim can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and even help those with PTSD find moments of tranquillity,” he said. “The gentle movement of the fish, their vibrant colours, and the peaceful environment of an aquarium offer a calming effect, especially for those dealing with stress and anxiety.”
Citing a recent international study, the doctor added that aquarium therapy has been shown to reduce heart rates by up to 3% in just 10 minutes, helping individuals feel more relaxed. “This can be particularly beneficial for those suffering from anxiety and panic disorders. Watching fish movements can help patients get a good sleep. Those suffering from sleeping disorders can also benefit from aquariums,” ,” he noted
With growing awareness about mental health and holistic healing, aquariums are fast becoming more than just decorative pieces in Kashmir—they are transforming into therapeutic sanctuaries, offering a glimpse of peace in a region that has long yearned for it.
