Srinagar, July 19: Rafi Ahmad Mir, former MLA from Pahalgam and General Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party on Friday advocated for the preservation of democratic principles in the governance of Jammu & Kashmir.
Addressing a workers’ convention held in Sallar Pahalgam, Mir expressed deep concern over what he termed as the arbitrary imposition of laws in Jammu 7 Kashmir. He warned that such actions could alienate the youth of the region. He emphasised the importance of respecting the people’s verdict and restoring democracy through adherence to democratic traditions rather than unilateral lawmaking.
Highlighting the historical struggle for identity and special constitutional status in Jammu & Kashmir, the Apni Party leader stressed the moral obligation of elected representatives to resist political encroachment and protect the rights of the people. He called for unity among all political parties, urging them to move beyond mere rhetoric and unite to safeguard the rights of the people.
Mir cautioned against focusing solely on developmental aspects of politics, arguing that overlooking deep-seated sentiments could lead to adverse consequences. He specifically criticised recent measures which he said have empowered the Lieutenant Governor and systematically disempowered the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
“Concerted efforts are needed to address the political aspirations of the people and protect their residual rights effectively,” he added.
