Baramulla, Nov 15: With an aim to support children in street situations, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Baramulla on Friday conducted a comprehensive anti-child labour drive for the identification of children involved in labour and begging in Baramulla’s Khanthbagh, Delina and Kanispora area.
The drive was carried out in several locations including, restaurants, hotels, and shops and ten suspected minors forced into child labour were identified.
Besides strict warnings for employing children under 18, the employers were asked to produce the relevant documents during the drive.
The drive was executed under the Pan India Campaign in coordination with the District Child Protection Unit, Child Helpline, Labour Department, Juvenile Police Unit, and District Police Baramulla.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee Wasim Hassan Paray encouraged the parents to admit their children in nearby schools or Anganwadi Centres.
“Every child has a right to education and this inhuman act endangers their future. Parents are requested not to involve their children in labour work, begging or abandon on the street otherwise strict action will be initiated.”
He further warned the hoteliers, industrialists, transporters and those who employ children in homes as a domestic helper and asked them to refrain from such practices.
“The general public is requested to report the cases of child exploitation by dialing Child Helpline’s number 1908 so the safety of vulnerable children can be ensured.”
Meanwhile, to promote awareness among the general public, the businesses in Baramulla town are now required to display the Child Helpline number.
