The 99th birth anniversary of the late Sarwanand Kaul Premi was commemorated at the Government Higher Secondary School, Soaf, in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district which was renamed in his honour. The birth anniversary was celebrated officially for the first time.
An official said that the Chief Education Officer, Anantnag advised the school authorities to mark the 99th birth anniversary of the late Kaul at the school which is now named as “Late Shri Sarwanand Kaul Premi (LSSKP) Govt. Higher Secondary School, Soaf.”
Sarwanand Koul Premi, a distinguished academician and scholar, was born on 2nd November 1924, in Soaf Shali, Kokernag, Anantnag. He diligently studied various scriptures, including the Vedas, Upanishads, and Islamic texts.
Late Kaul, along with his son, tragically lost their lives to terrorists in 1990.
Sarwanand Koul Premi authored over two dozen books in Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi, and English. His works encompassed “Panchadar,” a compilation of Kashmiri poems, a Kashmiri rendition of the globally acclaimed “Gitanjali,” “Mirzakak,” “Rupabhawani,” “Bhagwadgita” in Urdu, and the “Ramayan” in Kashmiri, among others.
Bashir Sahil, Principal LSSKP Govt. HSS Soaf said, Late Kaul had also translated the Gita into Kashmiri. We’ve heard from our elders that he was a noble person.
“It is a moment of joy for us to commemorate his birth anniversary. We have taken a pledge to carry forward his work and mission. We will collectively work towards the growth of literature and educational trends in the vicinity,” he said.
The programme received an online address from his elder son, Rajinder Kaul Premi.
He conveyed a message of communal brotherhood and paid tribute to several late senior citizens of Breng Kokernag. Premi expressed his gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, S F Hamid, and Chief Education Officer, Anantnag, K.K. Badiyal, for their dedicated efforts and guidance in organizing this significant event.
A large number of people attended the event and the event was graced by the representatives from the District Administration, Joint Director of Education (south), Chief Education Officer Anantnag, Sub-Divisional Administration, representatives from Panchayat Raj institutions (B.D.C, D.D.C, sarpanches, and panches of the area), besides representatives of Pandit community from Mattan and Vessu Camps. while it is the government’s responsibility to provide facilities such as bore wells and pipes, the maintenance and protection of these facilities lie with the individuals to whom they are provided.
