New Delhi, Jan 22: Sania Mirza, the Padma Bhushan awardee and India’s tennis icon, has been proposed for the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt. Honoris Causa) by Prof. Jasim Mohammad, a donor and former Media Advisor to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Prof. Jasim Mohammad, Alumnus, Donor and former Media Advisor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has written to the Vice-Chancellor of AMU Prof Naima Khatoon, proposing that the university confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt. Honoris Causa) on Padma Bhushan Sania Mirza, a globally acclaimed tennis star, during the upcoming AMU’s convocation ceremony.

In a letter addressed to Chairman of Academic Council of AMU and Vice-Chancellor, AMU Donor Member Prof. Jasim Mohammad highlighted Sania Mirza’s outstanding career and her efforts in breaking stereotypes while representing India on international platforms. He underscored her receipt of prestigious national honors, such as the Padma Shri (2006), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (2015), and the Padma Bhushan (2016). He also mentioned her appointment as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, emphasizing her influence as a global role model.

“By conferring this honorary degree upon Sania Mirza, Aligarh Muslim University will reaffirm its legacy of recognizing and honoring individuals who inspire society with their extraordinary achievements,” wrote Prof. Mohammad. He further added that such recognition would motivate AMU’s students and alumni to excel in their respective fields.

Former Head & Group Editor Sahara News Network Prof. Jasim Mohammad also pointed out how Sania Mirza’s journey from Hyderabad to becoming a world-renowned tennis icon embodies the values of resilience, hard work, and excellence that AMU cherishes. He urged the Vice-Chancellor and the Chairman of the Academic Council to consider his proposal, stating that honoring her would add prestige to the convocation ceremony and encourage the university community to aim higher.
