Srinagar, Feb 04: All roads within the jurisdiction of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have been cleared, Commissioner SMC Owais Ahmed said on Sunday.
Speaking with Rising Kashmir, Ahmed mentioned all roads in Srinagar city have been cleared of snow. “Forty-seven snow clearance machines, along with 2800 workers, were deployed on the job since Sunday morning.”
To oversee the snow clearance operation, Ahmed toured various city areas, including JNLM hospital, Dargah, and others. Accompanied by Joint Commissioner Syed Abul Qasim, Secretary SMC Mudasir Hussain, Chief Sanitation Officer Nazir Ahmad, SMC’s Public Relations Officer Idrees Aqail, along with GIS Expert Mir Altaf Nabi.
During the visit, the Commissioner stressed the importance of ensuring that no road remains uncleared. “He also directed the staff to keep a strict vigil on road inundation and deployed water sucker machines accordingly.”
The Commissioner, during the inspection, directed officials to keep men and machinery on high alert to provide hassle-free service to the city’s residents.
The SMC’s 24×7 control room promptly addressed grievances received and issued helpline numbers for the public to report any issues.
Earlier, in response to the MET predicting snowfall in the Valley, the SMC Commissioner assured people that they were ready to tackle any weather exigencies in Srinagar. He stated that they had put men and machinery on high alert.
Locals reported seeing men and machinery actively clearing snow across Srinagar in the morning.
A shopkeeper at Lal Chowk told Rising Kashmir that they were very satisfied with the SMC’s actions as they cleared the main road and other lanes in the locality promptly.
Upon reaching his business unit on Sunday, he was surprised to see Commissioner SMC on the ground on Sunday. “Such gestures from officials demonstrate their commitment to the welfare of the people,” the shopkeeper maintained.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation also stated they would keep their men and machinery on high alert to avoid any inconvenience to people in case of any other weather exigencies. The officials are in activation mode, and it will not take them much time to clear the roads if there is more snowfall, added the official.
Srinagar city witnessed snowfall on Saturday after a long dry spell, and as the snowfall started, men and machinery were activated by the SMC.
