Srinagar, Oct 06: Despite significant government investment in the construction of the Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Akhnoor, Jammu, students have yet to be provided with hostel facilities. This has forced many students to seek private accommodations, as the construction of the hostel buildings remains incomplete. Speaking with Rising Kashmir, students from the College said that the government began constructing one of the hostel buildings in 2019. "Although only minor work is pending for its completion, the building is largely ready," said a student, adding that the construction of a second hostel commenced around February-March 2025. Due to the lack of hostel facilities, students said they are compelled to find private accommodations in Jammu’s main city, which is approximately 40 kilometres from the college campus. "We have repeatedly approached college authorities to address this issue, but no action has yet been taken," another student said. "As a result, we travel up to 80 kilometres daily via local bus services from our rented homes to the college, incurring substantial expenses for transportation, accommodation, and food, which poses a major challenge." The students said that one of the hostel buildings, which is nearly complete, only requires some minor finishing work. If the college administration addresses these remaining tasks promptly, hostel facilities can be allocated to students, significantly easing their burden, they said, adding that this would help reduce their travel distance and improve their educational experience. The students have appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and expedite the completion of the hostel buildings, as well as to provide transportation facilities for all students. An official from the Government Ayurvedic Medical College said the remaining work on the hostel building is expected to be completed shortly, as a deadline is being set for the engineers working on the project. "Once finished, hostel accommodations will be made available to students," he said.
