Says attacks on doctors have triggered fear

Srinagar, Apr 28: The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking security measures in hospitals and medical colleges across Jammu and Kashmir in wake of recent incidents of assault on doctors and healthcare workers.

In the letter, AIMSA Vice President (External Affairs) Dr Mohammad Momin Khan highlighted growing concerns over the safety of medical professionals across the country, with particular emphasis on the situation in J&K.

He said doctors continue to serve under immense pressure in both urban and rural healthcare settings, often facing challenging and high-risk conditions.

“Repeated incidents of violence against medical professionals have created a sense of fear and insecurity within the healthcare community,” Khan said.

Referring to recent cases, he noted that doctors, including Dr Ainul Huda, Dr Zamin and paramedical staff, were assaulted at Government Medical College Anantnag, while another incident involving Dr Mustafa was reported at Government Medical College Baramulla.

AIMSA has urged the Union Government to immediately strengthen security arrangements in hospitals and medical institutions across India, with special focus on Jammu and Kashmir.

It also called for the deployment of trained security personnel in emergency wards and other high-risk areas, where prompt intervention is often required in critical situations.

The association further demanded strict legal action against perpetrators and fast-track investigations into cases of violence against doctors.

It stressed the need for installation of CCTV surveillance systems and establishment of efficient emergency response mechanisms in hospitals.

Additionally, AIMSA called for the formulation and strict enforcement of a comprehensive national policy to ensure the safety and protection of healthcare workers.

Khan reiterated that safeguarding doctors is crucial for maintaining an effective healthcare system and ensuring uninterrupted patient care, urging immediate intervention by the government on the matter.
