Budgam, Sept 24: To educate farmers about the benefits of millets, the Agricultural Department of Budgam has initiated road shows aimed at informing farmers about the health advantages and market value of this crop.
Fayaz Ahmad War, the Agricultural Officer of Beerwah, informed Rising Kashmir that the road show has commenced in Beerwah. This initiative will help farmers become familiar with the millet crop, which has been traditionally cultivated in our agricultural lands in the Kashmir region, he said
"Farmers will also learn about the nutrients present in this crop. The millet requires minimal irrigation water and can thrive with low water availability. Farmers have been encouraged to cultivate this crop once again in their agricultural fields. It is one of the traditional crops of the Kashmir Valley that people have historically grown on their lands," War said.
He said that millets offer numerous health benefits. Farmers must be informed about the advantages of millets, which can enable them to cultivate various types of crops in their fields and generate a substantial income from these crops.
"The primary goal of the awareness programme is to encourage farmers to grow those traditional crops that were previously cultivated in our agricultural lands, thereby reviving the traditional crops of the Kashmir Valley in Beerwah subdivision. Farmers lack adequate knowledge about these crops, which have high market demand and health benefits. The Agricultural Department is also conducting various programs to ensure that farmers are fully informed about government schemes," he added.
War urged farmers to register on the official web portal of the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP). There are numerous schemes available on this portal that farmers can utilize according to their preferences, he said.
“If farmers are willing to cultivate this crop on their land, the Agriculture Department is ready to give them full support. Farmers who are interested can call the relevant government staff stationed in their villages for assistance. They may also visit the Agriculture Department, where our expert team will provide guidance on how to successfully grow this crop in their fields,” he said.
