• Security of both Jammu, Kashmir region priority
• Two Companies of BSF deployed, Assam Assam Rifles in pipeline
Srinagar, Aug 03: In response to a surge in terrorist attacks in the Jammu region over recent months, the central government has announced a comprehensive new security strategy aimed at eradicating terrorism and enhancing safety in both Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials.
During a series of three recent meetings with Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, top security officials discussed the escalating security challenges in Jammu. The central government has prioritized bolstering security in the Jammu region while also addressing the situation in Kashmir to ensure overall regional stability.
“The security of the Jammu region is the priority of the central government, while Kashmir cannot be neglected at the same time. Both regions hold significance in the overall peace of UT,” top official told Rising Kashmir, adding the central government is mulling to implement revised security plans in the region.
The revised security plan includes measures to secure the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB). The plan will see the deployment of two companies of Assam Rifles, with two battalions of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel already airlifted from Odisha to Jammu. Key objectives of the plan include comprehensive border surveillance, enhanced monitoring of major highways and vital routes, strategic troop redeployment, and improved intelligence operations in rural areas.
“The goals include 100 per cent surveillance over borders to curb terrorist infiltration particularly in Jammu region, surveillance on major highways and vital routes, troops redeployment at strategic places, work on intelligence parts in rural areas of Jammu and others things.
The official further said that all heads of security forces including Army, BSF, and Police departments also have directed to review security arrangements along the borders on a regular basis.
“More para commandos will be deployed during intelligence operations, so that casualties can be averted to our side in the Jammu region,” he added.
Over the past three years Jammu region has seen a significant increase in terror activities, resulting in killing of 52 security personnel and 62 terrorists since 2021. Civilian casualties during this period have reached 19.
Data indicates that 12 security personnel, including an Army major, and 10 civilians have been killed in terrorist attacks since January 1, 2024.
Among the 62 terrorists killed since 2021, 21 were killed in Poonch and 21 in Rajouri, primarily while attempting infiltration towards the region.
In contrast, most casualties among security forces occurred within the hinterland, often in ambushes by infiltrated terrorists operating with impunity.
Earlier this week, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Zone, Anand Jain Monday highlighted the latest trends in terror activities in the region and stressed on the importance of inter-agency cooperation to mitigate these threats.
The Jammu region, which had been relatively peaceful from 2005 to 2021 after security forces dismantled long-standing terrorism, has recently experienced a rise in attacks.
