Srinagar, July 11: The body of 13-year-old Ronak Jan, who drowned in the river Pohru, was retrieved on Tuesday after an exhaustive four-day search operation. The young girl, hailing from Sulkote Kupwara, lost her life while attempting to retrieve a friend’s slippers from the river.
Following the immediate report of the incident, a joint effort by the local Police, SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), Army, and MARCOS (Marine Commandos) was launched, with the invaluable assistance of the local community. Despite their relentless efforts, no leads were discovered until this afternoon when the girl’s body was found approximately 3 kilometers downstream from the incident site, at Awatkul.
The unfortunate incident unfolded when Ronak Jan, along with two other minors, Zehran Javid (11) and Sadiya Fayaz (9), ventured into the river in an attempt to retrieve a friend’s slippers that had accidentally fallen into the water. Swift action from locals ensured the safe rescue of Zehran Javid and Sadiya Fayaz. However, Ronak Jan succumbed to the powerful currents of the river.
The search operation spanned from Jaggerpora to Chogal, with the collaborative efforts of Kupwara and Handwara police, SDRF, MARCOS, locals, and civil administration. The teams tirelessly combed through the surrounding areas, leaving no stone unturned, in their quest to locate the missing girl.
The recovery of Ronak Jan’s body brings profound grief to her family and the entire locality. In her native village of Sulkoot, in Kupwara district, emotional scenes unfolded as the news of her tragic demise spread. The young girl was staying with her relatives in Jaggerpora at the time of the incident.
As the legal formalities were completed, the deceased was handed over to her family to proceed with the last rites.
The incident has left the local community mourning the loss of a young life and serves as a somber reminder to take necessary precautions to avoid such tragic accidents.
