Advanced trainings on greenhouse advantages, postharvest management begin at SKUAST-K

Srinagar, Nov 21: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir inaugurated two advanced management development programs (A-MDP) on the postharvest handling of horticulture produce and greenhouse advantages in vegetable production at the Shalimar campus. 
The seven-day training programs of the Faculty of Horticulture are sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, with an aim to upskill the participants with the latest postharvest management techniques and greenhouse technology. About 25 entrepreneurs, unemployed youth, progressive farmers and students are participating in each training program. 
The A-MDP, ‘Recent Innovations in Post-Harvest Handling, Preservation and Protection of Agricultural and Horticultural Produce for Entrepreneurship Development’ is organised by the Division of Food Science and Technology and the second A-MDP, ‘The Green House Advantage: Empowering Entrepreneurs in Vegetable Cultivation’ is organised by the Division of Vegetable Science. 
SKUAST-K’s Director, Education, Prof MAA Siddique, who was the chief guest at the inaugural functions of both trainings, highlighted the need for improvement in post-harvest practices and increasing the processing of agricultural and horticultural produce. He also said the Greenhouse Advantage training will help aspiring business leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the world of sustainable vegetable farming. 
Director, Research and Planning & Monitoring, Prof Haroon R Naik, who is also the nodal officer of the MSME trainings, highlighted the significance of capacity building and skilling of the youth for meeting the future challenges of the agriculture and food sector. Besides, such trainings provide participants chance to network with fellow entrepreneurs, industry experts, and potential collaborators. 
Dean, Faculty of Horticulture, Prof Shabir Ahmad Wani, said such trainings encourage entrepreneurs to adopt eco-friendly methods and contribute to the overall well-being of the planet. Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof Rafiq Ahmad Shahardar, laid emphasis on the creation of a culture that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship.
Tejinder Wazir, Member J&K Kisan Advisory Board, Prof Baseerat Afroza, Head, Division of Vegetable Science, Prof Syed Zameer Hussain, Head, Division of Food Science and Technology, coordinators and co-coordinators of both the training programs also spoke on the inaugural functions. HoDs of various divisions of the Faculty of Horticulture, faculty members and SKUAST-K officers also attended the inaugural ceremonies.
