Srinagar, July 26:
In a landmark decision, the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have permitted the 8th Muharram procession to be held on the traditional route from Guru Bazar to Dalgate after a hiatus of three decades. The Additional Director General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar, chaired a joint meeting on Wednesday, wherein key arrangements, security measures, and procession management were discussed in view of the sacred period of Muharram.
The meeting, presided over by ADGP Vijay Kumar, primarily focused on formulating comprehensive strategies to address potential challenges and maintain order during this significant religious event. Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) officers were present, deliberating on security measures that encompassed personnel deployment and technological enhancements to ensure the safety of public gatherings and religious processions.
One of the crucial points of discussion during the meeting was crowd management, aiming to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain a peaceful environment throughout the processions. Emphasis was laid on efficient traffic management to ensure smooth traffic flow during Muharram processions while minimizing disruptions based on inputs and apprehensions received from intelligence agencies and law-abiding citizens.
The utilization of technology, such as drones, was suggested to monitor crowd gatherings and take preventive measures effectively. The authorities emphasized the importance of close coordination between Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure a well-coordinated security response.
Engaging with the community and fostering open communication were also deliberated upon during the meeting, seeking the cooperation of the people in maintaining a safe and peaceful atmosphere.
ADGP Vijay Kumar later issued strict directives to ensure compliance with the orders from the Civil Administration, particularly regarding certain processions, especially on the 8th of Muharram. He called upon all citizens to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with the authorities to make Muharram a safe and secure occasion for everyone.
Among others present in the meeting included several top officers, including IG CRPF Ajay Yadav, IG BSF Ashok Yadav, IG CRPF GyanendraVerma, DIG Police South Kashmir, north Kashmir & Central Kashmir, DIG CRPF, DIG ITBP, DIG SSB, SSP Srinagar, and SSP Security.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, holds deep religious significance for all Muslims, particularly the Shia sect. Ensuring a safe environment for commemoration events and processions is paramount, taking into account all aspects of public order.
