Srinagar, Apr 26: Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma on Sunday said the Union Territory welcomes tourists with open arms, asserting that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah remains committed to serving visitors round the clock and making J&K the number one destination in the world.

Speaking during the 71st edition of Sundays on Cycle along the banks of Dal Lake and at the golf course, the minister thanked Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the Prime Minister, and the Delhi government for supporting fitness initiatives and for naming Omar Abdullah as ambassador of the Fit India campaign.

He said the scenic setting of Dal Lake and the golf course inspires people to stay fit. He praised local cyclists, calling them among the best, and stressed that sports play a key role in building a strong nation.

The minister said the people of J&K stand firmly against terrorism and promote a message of peace, unity, and prosperity. He noted that areas which once saw little activity are now vibrant again, reflecting improving conditions and public participation.

On the Nasha Mukta Bharat campaign, Sharma said the effort must continue with full force. He congratulated the Chief Minister, the Lieutenant Governor, and the police leadership for their work. He warned that drug abuse targets the country’s youth, noting that a large share of India’s population is under 35.

He said those pushing drugs are harming the nation and must be dealt with firmly. At the same time, he urged society to support affected youth.

He said addiction should not bring shame to families and called for better de addiction centres and support from organisations like Art of Living and Radha Soami.

He said parents must help children return to the right path and stressed collective responsibility. He added that those profiting from drug trade over years must be brought to zero tolerance under the law.

The minister said the government remains committed to strengthening the fight against drugs and building a healthier society through sports and awareness.
