Srinagar, May 03: Saqlain Tariq from Poonch has earned a place among 28 players shortlisted by the Volleyball Federation of India for upcoming international events.

He stands as the only player from Jammu and Kahmir in the list and the lone participant with experience in the Prime Volleyball League.

The selection trials took place from April 29 to May 1. A seven-member panel led by head coach Dragan Mihailovic assessed players on current performance levels and their ability to meet international standards. The panel also evaluated each athlete’s potential to deliver impact performances in high pressure matches.

The committee has set its immediate focus on key tournaments including the AVC Men’s Cup 2026, the Asian Championship, and the Asian Games in Japan.

At the same time, it is working with a long-term plan targeting the World Championship 2027 and Olympic qualification in 2028. The shortlisted players will now undergo further administrative procedures before joining the national coaching camp.

Saqlain’s inclusion has drawn attention in his home district Poonch. His early coach, Mohd Tariq, who heads the Shaheed DySP Manjit Singh Memorial Volleyball Club, welcomed the decision and thanked the federation and the Volleyball Association of J&K for recognising talent from remote areas.

He said Saqlain’s journey reflects discipline and persistence. He added that such achievements can motivate young players in J&K to pursue volleyball seriously and aim for national selection.

The list of probables includes players across key roles such as setters, opposites, middle blockers, outside hitters, and liberos. The final squad for international competitions will be selected after the national camp and performance reviews.
