Budgam: A 12-year-old minor girl was found dead during Saturday early morning close to her residence at Gulwanpora Sebdan area in central Kashmir’s Budgam district
According to a police official, Police Station Budgam received information at around 10:00 pm on May 23, 2026, regarding the disappearance of the minor girl, who had reportedly gone missing from her home during the evening hours.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police registered FIR No. 139/2026 under relevant sections of law and launched an extensive search operation.
“During the early morning hours today, the body of the minor girl was recovered at a short distance from her residence. Subsequently, all necessary medico-legal and investigative formalities were initiated,” the official said.
Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Budgam, Sajad Ahmad, to probe the incident. The SIT is examining all possible angles to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.
Officials said the investigation would be conducted in a fair, transparent, and professional manner.
Meanwhile, police appealed to media organisations and the general public, particularly social media users, to refrain from disclosing the identity or photographs of the minor, as such disclosure is prohibited under law.
The public has also been urged not to circulate unverified information or engage in speculation, as it could hamper the investigation and cause distress to the family.
