Srinagar, May 19: The Jammu Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has recorded an overwhelming passenger response within days of its regular operations, emerging as a major transport lifeline for travelers across J&K during the ongoing summer tourism season.
According to official figures, nearly 45,000 passengers have traveled on the service within the first ten days since regular operations began earlier this month. The growing demand reflects increasing public preference for faster, safer and more comfortable rail connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.
The train service has witnessed exceptionally high occupancy during weekends and holiday periods, with several services running above 95 percent capacity. Last week Sunday service reportedly crossed 98 percent occupancy despite the recent expansion of train coaches from eight to twenty.
The Vande Bharat Express currently operates through two pairs of services connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar under the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link corridor. The service has significantly reduced travel time between the two cities, allowing passengers to complete the journey in less than five hours.
Tourism stakeholders believe the improved rail connectivity will provide a major boost to Kashmir’s tourism sector during the peak summer months. Destinations including Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are expected to witness increased tourist arrivals due to easier and affordable access.
Travelers have also praised the scenic railway journey passing through the Himalayan landscape, including tunnels and iconic railway bridges such as Chenab and Anji. Air conditioned coaches, onboard catering and large viewing windows have further enhanced the passenger experience.
Apart from tourists, the train service is benefiting students, traders, office employees and pilgrims traveling between Jammu and Kashmir. Many passengers say the railway service has reduced dependence on the Jammu Srinagar National Highway, which often faces weather related disruptions.
The Vande Bharat service has also been designed to operate during harsh winter conditions, improving year round connectivity in the region.
Tourism operators described the strong passenger response as a significant milestone for railway infrastructure development in J&K, stating that the service is expected to strengthen tourism, trade and regional mobility in the coming years.
