Jammu, Feb 17: Indian Army achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully performing surgery on a 98-year-old veteran suffering from femoral neck fracture.
The Jammu based Defence PRO, Suneel Bartwal, said that veteran officer with femur fracture and newly diagnosed B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (blood cancer) has been successfully treated at 166 Military Hospital, Jammu.
The veteran had also additional health challenges. He suffered the fracture on February 10th due to a fall. Upon evaluation, it was discovered that he also had bone marrow involvement indicative of chronic blood cancer, the Defence PRO said.
Recognizing the need for fracture stabilization to alleviate pain and promote mobility, surgery was promptly advised by the Hematologist at the Army Hospital in Jammu.
The surgery, involving Closed Reduction and Internal Fixation with an Intertan Nail, was conducted on February 12th, 2024, under general anesthesia with high-risk consent.
This was the first of its kind surgery conducted on a 98 year old patient suffering from blood cancer, neck femur fracture and with multiple health complications, he said.
The post-operative period progressed smoothly, and the patient began full weight-bearing ambulation with a walker the following day, he said adding that this indicates the patient is on path of recovery at this old age.
Today, on the 3rd day post-operation, the patient has been discharged from 166 Military Hospital. He is now referred to an empanelled center for further evaluation and management of B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia by a Hemato Oncologist.
