Jammu, Dec 30: The 6th J&K Union Territory Karate Championship 2024, featuring Sub-Junior, Cadet, Junior, and Senior categories, commenced today with great enthusiasm at the Indoor Stadium in Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu. Organized by the Amateur Karate Do Association of Jammu & Kashmir (AKAJK), the event has drawn more than 500 participants from various districts across the Union Territory, including over 200 players from Kashmir Province, despite challenging weather conditions.
The opening ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries. Sat Sharma, President of BJP J&K, served as the Chief Guest, while Sunil Sharma, Leader of Opposition and Patron of AKAJK, attended as Guest of Honour. Arun Prabhat Singh, former national karate player and President of BJYM, was also present.
In his address, Sat Sharma praised the efforts of AKAJK in promoting karate and nurturing young talent. He expressed his delight at witnessing players from diverse regions of the UT coming together, emphasizing the significance of sports in fostering unity and cultural understanding.
Sunil Sharma commended the organizing committee for hosting a remarkable event that not only promotes physical fitness but also inspires youth to become responsible citizens. “Events like these bring together people from all communities and regions, creating a spirit of unity and mutual respect,” he remarked.
The opening ceremony began with a welcome speech by Shihan Ambedkar Gupta, President of AKAJK, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Deepa Sharma, Joint Secretary of AKAJK.
The championship continues tomorrow, December 31, with events in the cadet, junior, and senior boys’ and girls’ categories. The medal distribution ceremony will take place at 4 PM, with Satish Sharma, Hon’ble Cabinet Minister for Sports, as the Chief Guest and Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the Sports Council, as the Guest of Honour.
