Baramulla, Mar 1: Baramulla Police on Wednesday said it arrested 58 drug peddlers and registered 40 cases in this regard under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) in the first two months of the ongoing year.
A police official said that narcotic substances worth crores of rupees were seized in the month of January and February 2023 in this north Kashmir district.
“During January and February, Baramulla Police registered 40 cases under NDPS Act, arrested 58 drug peddlers and recovered contraband worth Rs 3 crore 17 lakh and 67 thousand, besides a cash amount of Rs 40.15 lakh,” the official said. “3.14 kilograms of brown sugar, 152 grams of heroin, 4.671 kilograms of charas, 58.20 kilograms of poppy straw and 23 cannabis powders were seized from these drug peddlers.
“In this war against drug peddlers, nine vehicles were also seized,” the official said.
He said police have requested the general public of Baramulla to come forward with the information about drug peddlers in their areas in order to support police to eradicate the menace of drugs from society “which is the real sign of the Police-Public relationship”. The official also assured that the identity of the person(s) providing information will be kept confidential.
Earlier in a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla Amud Ashok Nagpure said the war on drugs will continue until the menace is completely eradicated in the district.
SSP said that “handlers in Pakistan are using smugglers to push drugs into Jammu & Kashmir to spread drug addiction among the youth”. “Our network is strong, but with the support and cooperation of the people, such modules can be busted,” he said, adding that police have identified hotspots and will be using technical and human intelligence for future operations.
